What is Snowflake?

Snowflake is a data warehouse built from the ground up for the cloud. In traditional warehouses storage and compute are tied together, forcing you to size capacity in advance. Snowflake separates them completely: data lives in a single, inexpensive storage layer, while processing runs in Virtual Warehouses you can start, resize and shut down on demand. The result - you pay for compute only while queries are actually running, and performance stays predictable as data volumes and user numbers grow.

The three architecture layers

Storage Layer All data kept compressed and encrypted in the cloud - at low storage cost
Compute Layer Separate Virtual Warehouses per team - so one never slows down another
Cloud Services Layer Security, metadata, optimisation and query planning - managed automatically

That separation is the heart of Snowflake: the finance team running a heavy report never slows down the sales dashboard, because each team works on its own compute resources - over exactly the same data, with no duplication and no copies.

When do we choose Snowflake?

  • Variable workloads - month-end or quarter-end peaks alongside quiet periods
  • Multiple teams consuming the same data concurrently with different performance needs
  • A multi-cloud strategy, or a wish to avoid lock-in to a single cloud vendor
  • A need to share data with external parties - suppliers, customers or subsidiaries
  • Organisations that want a fully managed warehouse without a dedicated DBA team

Snowflake and Power BI - how do they fit together?

Snowflake acts as a direct data source for Power BI, in either Import or DirectQuery mode. In practice we build a business-ready modelling layer inside Snowflake - tables and views that already encode the definitions your organisation works by - and build the semantic model and reports on top of it. Reports stay fast, and business logic lives in one place instead of being duplicated report by report.

What do we offer?

  • Scoping and setting up a Snowflake environment - from data modelling to permissions
  • Building ingestion and data movement from ERP, CRM and files - including Azure Data Factory
  • Migration from an existing warehouse (SQL Server, Synapse, Oracle) to Snowflake
  • Cost optimisation - warehouse sizing, auto-suspend and usage policy
  • Data warehouse development and connecting it to reports and dashboards

Solution benefits

Storage Separated from Compute

Pay for storage and processing power separately - each scales on its own

Instant Scalability

Scale compute up or down in seconds, even in the middle of a working day

Multi-Cloud

Runs on Azure, AWS and Google Cloud - with no change to your solution

Zero Maintenance

No servers, indexes or manual tuning - Snowflake handles all of it

Time Travel

Restore data and query earlier versions up to 90 days back

Secure Data Sharing

Share data with suppliers and customers without copies or file exports
